Meg watched during lunch, while I studied the book some more. Apparently you could hold up to three spells in you at a time. Any more than that and you could burn up, like, literally.

I was late for the after school watch. Eric was marching down the road just as I made it outside.

I tried to follow, but another person stepped in front of me. One I’d been avoiding.

“Why won’t you answer my calls?” Marcus asked.

Marcus looked at me with hurt eyes. I wanted to hug him, but this wasn’t the time to melt under a puppy-dog gaze.
